Sexual behaviour: Courting dissatisfaction
نویسندگان
چکیده
A nuclear receptor, the product of the dissatisfaction gene, has been found to regulate Drosophila sexual behaviour, probably via its action in a small subset of neurons. The results shed new light on the genetic determination of sexual behaviour.

The strength of a female mate preference increases with predation risk.
When females search for mates and their perceived risk of predation increases, they less often express preferences for males that use conspicuous courtship signals, relaxing sexual selection on production of these signals. Here, we report an apparent exception to this general pattern. Courting male fiddler crabs Uca beebei sometimes build pillars of mud at the openings to their burrows in which...

Keywords: courtship Drosophila melanogaster fruit fly homosexual behaviour learning The mechanisms maintaining homosexual behaviour in animals are not well understood. In fruit flies, where maleemale courtship is prevalent, it has been suggested that young males gain from being courted by mature males, perhaps through learning. I conducted two series of experiments to critically examine why mat...

This paper reviews the influence of social mechanisms on oestrus and sexual motivation in pigs. The social relations between the animals and the signals they send out can inhibit as well as encourage their social motivation. Social stimuli from both boars and other sows in oestrus tend to induce and synchronise oestrus and ovulation amongst sows. The courting behaviour of boars is also facilita...
متن کاملThe Effect of Visual Obstructions on the Sexual Behavior of Guppies: The Importance of Privacy
Sexual selection is the outcome of behavioral interactions within and between the sexes. Numerous studies show how individuals modify their behavior in response to ecological or social conditions, and such changes may therefore affect the evolutionary outcome of sexual selection. This study examined the effect of habitat structure on the sexual behavior of male and female guppies (Poecilia ret ...

Female mate choice behaviour has significant evolutionary consequences, yet its mechanistic origins are not fully understood. Recent studies of female sensory systems have made great strides in identifying internal mechanisms governing female preferences. Only recently, however, have we begun to identify the dynamic genomic response associated with mate choice behaviour. Poeciliids provide a po...
